“Boys and their toys”, the age old proverb is personified when one looks at gaming industry and all the high-tech gadgets associated with it. With 2012 dawning, the market is all prepped up for release of new gaming consoles from industry stalwarts like Sony and Microsoft whereas the recently concluded annual Consumer Electronic Show or CES also unveiled some must have gamer gadgets for every gaming enthusiast.

Xbox 720 by Microsoft
The next generation Xbox was the topic of gossip last year and rumors were that it would be unveiled at CES 2012. However, the highly anticipated unveiling was postponed till gaming expo show of next year but the gaming community did get a preview of what the new Xbox would be like! For starters, the internal Microsoft jargon for the new console is “Durango” and it would be leaps and bounds ahead performance wise of its current predecessor. The graphics rendering chip would pack unparalleled power and be capable of churning out graphics that would incorporate CGI and 3D capturing. The storage device would be “interchangeable solid state storage” which indicates that memory cards would still be utilized.

PlayStation 4 by Sony
Direct rival of Microsoft’s Xbox, Sony’s PlayStation’s new version is slated to be released later this year. Although, Sony hasn’t yet issued an official statement giving a specific date but if analysis is carried out of when Sony premiered PS2 and PS3 a pattern can be detected which points towards a late 2012 release. There are critics who claim that PS4 release is all gossip with no substance because Sony in a statement made it clear that PS3 is going to have a shelf life of 10 years which would be completed in 2016. Since no official updates from the Sony have yet been made, all the fans can do is keep their fingers crossed till the end of this year.

HD Nintendo Console
Nintendo, makers of Wii, has yet to transition to the level of Xbox or PlayStation when it comes to raw appeal for reeling in hardcore gamers. Having said this, Wii does have legions of dedicated fans, who are anxiously waiting for the next piece of hardware from Nintendo. Rumor has it that the company is planning to unveil their latest creation during E3 in June this year. Will the Wii brand still be used for the new system? Or if it would be backward compatible for Wii users, is unknown at the moment. Nintendo reps when contacted for comment stringently refused to do so.

Apple’s iPad took the world by storm and created quite a roar in the gaming world too, because of its gaming supportive features. Samsung has now joined the foray to give Apple some competition with its full high definition, more sleek and thin Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Galaxy Tab has got android OS running with full browser support for flash and flash based products. Gamers looking for a break from using iOS platform would surely find galaxy tab a worthy investment.

Project Fiona
It may sound like something inspired from the Shrek movies, but believe us, project Fiona packs a punch and rightfully occupies a position in top gamer gadgets countdown. Created by Razer, Project Fiona is a tablet made specifically for gaming purposes as it can effortlessly render the intensely graphic rich games of the current generation. The display screen is 1280 X 800 in measurement and comes with inbuilt accelerometers with controllers adorning both the sides of the table. Project Fiona is expected to be available for masses by the end half of this year for a price of $1000.
PlayStation Vita
With status of PS4 release remaining ambiguous, Sony has at least presented this little gem to keep the fans satiated. The device comprises of a 5 inch OLED screen ensuring crisp graphics display, front touch screen, rare touch pad and motion sensing capabilities. Sony seemed to have lined up the release of their new uncharted game with the launching of this device to provide it additional hype, the only drawback that will slightly mar the experience is the need to buy overpriced memory card.
